As our analysis for the issue of same-sex marriage took place, we analyzed a lot about both sides of this issue. We found that based on the cartoonists point of view, they are going to frame it the way they see it. Their interpretation of this topic could be the positive aspects with negative framing and visa versa. We realized that as a citizen, you have to look at both sides of a controversial topic. You don't want to believe everything you read. Research done on your own is necessary and beneficial. Editorial cartoonists have the ability to relay a controversial topic and present it in a way that represents the view of a group of people, but that doesn't mean that it represents your views. You've got to take matters into your own hands and look at both sides of an issue before you can make an educated opinion about it.
We also found that we really had to look at all the small details because cartoonists include small details that are extremely symbolic. When you don't pick up on those details, it makes a big difference on how you view the cartoon.
In regards to same-sex marriage, we noticed that a lot of the cartoons were framing same-sex marriage in a positive light. They brought out the good aspects of gay marriage.
We felt that we there are a lot more issues than we thought there was that were highlighted in cartoons. Cartoons are easy to look at and you gain a lot of information in a quick read.
We were encouraged to be a lot more open-minded about this issue. Most of us grew up in Utah & Idaho, which are very conservative, religious states and because of that we haven't been exposed to a lot of the same things as people that live in other parts of the country. This project helped us gain a lot more insight into what same-sex marriage is and why it is such a huge issue.
